在1862年联邦议会决定“赠地办学法案”后，缅因州受此影响，于1865年决定办“缅因农业与技工学院”。1868年9月21日开学。当时只有2位老师，12位学生，1871年学校开设了农业、土木工程机械工程3个专业。1872年首次招收女生。1881年开始授予硕士学位。1897年改名为“缅因大学”1923年成立研究生院，1930年成立教育学院，1958年成立商学院(即企业管理这院)。
